this isn't much of a piece of art, and for that I apologize.
yesterday I had to say goodbye to a man I love dearly - my sweet, sweet grandfather, whom we nicknamed “Grampy Carl” because of his resemblance to Carl Fredricksen.
last saturday we found out he had cancer, and yesterday he went home to heaven. it all went by too fast. he was only 67. he and my grandmother would have been married 50 years this year.
one of my most precious memories with him was when we went to see Up for the very first time. we took him and my grandmother along with us, and they both loved it to pieces. Carl reminded all of us so much of Grampy. when we were leaving the theater, I overheard a kid say, “did you see that man? he looked just like the guy from Up!” I knew he was referring to my grandfather, and that made us all smile and laugh.
Grampy had the best sense of humor I know. he was witty and sharp and had a fantastic way with words and puns. my mom takes after him a lot in that way, so there’s always a little piece of Grampy around the house every day.
I regret a lot of things, like not spending much time with him (most of that was circumstantial and I had no control over it), or not sending him emails or skyping him more often. he would have loved to see our faces a lot more than he did, and I would have had some precious messages from him to cherish. we couldn’t go see him because to get tickets to Maine last-minute like my mom had to do would have probably cost us a couple thousand dollars.
he lived a good life and he’s in a better place now. thankfully, he didn’t have to suffer long from the cancer. my mom said that he kept telling her how proud he was of us and that me and my siblings were such good kids, he loved us so much. I recorded a video of myself singing Amazing Grace for him, and he kept saying things like “Isn’t that something. Heavenly.” I’m really glad he was able to see that before he left us. :’)
thanks for the adventure and all the laughs, Grampy. now you go have a new one of your own. I love you.
